Do you have a Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant?
Do you have a Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant? There are many reports that the use of the implants have early failure and some patients have developed serious health problems and disabilities related to particles of metallic debris that are shed by the devices as they wear.
Please be advised the metal-on-metal hip replacement device manufactured by Depuy Orthopedics has been recalled. This device is under investigation for defects. The New York Times reports the hip implant in which the ball-and-socket components are made from metals like cobalt and chromium, accounted until relatively recently for about one-third of the estimated 250,000 hip replacement procedures. Many side effects of the malfunctioning implant are being recorded, including metallosis. Because these metals are dangerous the FDA on May 6 sent the request to J&J and 20 other device makers, including Biomet Inc., Stryker Corp. (SYK) and Zimmer Holdings Inc. (ZMH), asking them to study the levels of metals in patients for at least eight years after implantation.
Additionally, If the implant becomes loose it will continue to cause pain and the implant may also dislocate. In order to heal, surgery might be needed or an alternative hip implant. Bloomberg reports The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) to study whether its implants raise the level of metal in patients’ blood to dangerous levels.

Attorney Jared Hagood is from Plano, Texas. He attended Plano Senior High School and recalls the close-knit community in which he grew up. Hagood is heartbroken when he receives calls from clients who cannot walk and are disabled or from people who have developed other serious health problems due to the DePuy hip replacement surgery. It touches him deeply, and he is especially sensitive to the subject when the callers are from Plano, his hometown, and the North Texas area. "I grew up in Plano. Some of my clients live in the neighborhoods where I grew up. Their children went to my high school. They are my neighbors, my parents' friends and their parents and grandparents, members of the community who helped shape me into the man I am today. Together, we stand against those who did this," Hagood says.

According to NPR, Dr. Joshua Jacobs, chairman of orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, reports that the metal-on-metal implant has a failure rate that is unacceptably high. For some patients, within the space of five years, all the metal replacements can cause terrible pain and may become loose. This results in the implants being replaced early.

The British Orthopaedic Association Release

August 05, 2011
Recently, The British Orthopaedic Association and British Hip Society released data that the metal on metal hip implants fail as often as 49% at 6 years for the DePuy ASR XL hip device. This is four times what Johnson & Johnson reported in 2010.
Download Statement by the President of the British Orthopaedic Association

1. That J&J was not forthcoming with doctors about the risks/failure rates it knew about while it was still heavily marketing the ASR hip system.
2. That patients with ASR devices who currently are not suffering any of the side effects of this bad hip can expect a much higher probability of complications/failures as time goes on.
